It is so boring if everyone writes about one university, there will be 21 passages about one thing. Therefore, I will tell you about a new thing to make you feel relax.
Attending a university is an important part of a person’s life. Today, many people go to a university to study and train for a future job in subjects likes law, medicine, or education. But the university is not a modern invention; moreover, it has a history that is over a thousand years ago.
The world’s oldest university, Al-Azhar, is in Cairo, Egypt. In A.D 972, it was first built as a mosque-a place where followers of the Muslim religion go to pray. A few years later, learners and teachers began meeting in the mosque in ‘tutoring circle’. They read and talked about the subject of law. Around 988, leaders in the city of Cairo decided to create a school for higher learning and the University of Al-Azhar was founded.
At Al-Azhar, there were many university ‘firsts’. Courses were created, and the earliest ones taught at there were in law and religion. In a course, students read and studied with a teacher, but there was also free discussion. Often, students and teachers talked about a topic, and there was no ‘right’ answer.
Finally, scholars from around the world came to Al-Azhar to teach and do research. At the university, people study the past, but it was also a place for sharing new ideas.
Over a thousand years later, Al-Azhar is still an important university in the world. Its library contains more than 250,000 of the world’s oldest and most valuable books. Today, many of the world’s most important universities such as Oxford and Harvard still follow the traditions started at Al-Azhar.
Although we are not studying at the most famous university, we should proud of ourselves. Formerly, a university was thought of as a group of men who had come together to discover new facts and ideas, and it was only in later times that the word “university” came to mean the building in which learner men studied and taught others. A university must do more than supply the facts of medicine, law, engineering; moreover, it must be train its students in such a way that they themselves will always be eager to search for new knowledges and new ideas. We only study truly after graduated from the university.
